After an early breakfast in Yangon, we begin our Golden Rock tour with a short drive north to the town of Bago. Our first stop will be at the famous Kya Khet Wine Monastery, followed by the Shwe Thar Lyaung Pagoda where we will see a fabulous image of the reclining Buddha. From here, it’s just a short drive to our next stop at the magnificent Shwemawdaw Pagoda. Over 1000 years old, and standing taller than Yangon’s famous Shwedagon Pagoda, this is one of the most important monuments in the region and a highlight of your Golden Rock tour. From here, another short drive takes us to Kinpun camp, just a stone’s throw from the Golden Rock itself.
Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, to give the Golden Rock its full name, is one of Myanmar’s most recognisable monuments. Perched precariously on a towering cliff edge and covered entirely in pure gold leaf, this mighty rock it is not only an incredible sight but also a significant religious site. Measuring some 25 feet in height, the giant boulder sits on a natural ledge and is, according to legend, prevented from falling by just a single strand of the Lord Buddha’s hair.
On top of the rock itself lies a small pagoda which is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists, and draws the faithful from across the country. The mighty Golden Rock can only usually be accessed by taking a local truck along a winding mountain road to the very top of the hill, or as part of Golden Rock tour.
After our visit, we head back to Yangon where your trip ends with the drop of to your hotel.
